Speech and Language Services - Vancouver Coastal Health
Public Health and Services for Children
Provided by Vancouver Coastal Health
Speech-Language Pathologists (S-LPs) use a variety of activities to help children learn new speech and language skills. During their first appointment, the S-LP will evaluate how well a child is talking and listening. The S-LP looks at: pronunciation, how well the tongue and lips move, how children understand and use language, and if there are any voice, hearing, or stuttering problems.
In the therapy sessions the S-LP will:
- Checking children's communication skills as they grow and develop .
- Talking with families about their goals for their children.
- Helping children learn new communication skills
- Showing parents how to help their children
- Playing games and using books and toys as fun ways to help children learn
After referral, a Speech-Language Pathologist will assess each child. This assessment will help identify the child's speech, language, and communication needs, as well as the type of therapy and information needed.
S-LP's may go to childcare centres to provide support to teachers and help children communicate better there. Services are available in English or with a translator.
