Peer Match - Telephone Support for Cancer Patients and Caregivers

Provided by Canadian Cancer Society

Provides peer telephone support to anyone 18+ who is diagnosed with or caring for someone with cancer.
Peer Match is a free, confidential telephone-based service that is available for anyone 18 years and older, who has been diagnosed with cancer or is caring for someone with cancer. This service provides the opportunity to talk to someone who has had a similar cancer experience. Trained volunteers match with the person reaching out and can share insights and ideas for coping during a cancer experience.

There are three steps to connect with a Peer Match:
  1. Register online
  2. Identify the categories you’d like to have in common with your Peer Match.
  3. Connect with your Peer Match by telephone.

While volunteers are trained to provide support, they are not mental health professionals, and this program is not a counselling service. This service is available in languages other than English or French, as several volunteers speak other languages. This can be arranged by choosing a specific language when identifying the categories to have in common with your Peer Match.

The frequency of calls will be decided upon by the individual and the volunteer. The length of connections varies greatly. Although volunteers are typically available to make one or two calls after treatment has ended, in general their focus is on supporting the individual during active treatment.
