The ALS Society of BC is dedicated to providing direct support to ALS patients, along with their families and caregivers, to ensure the best quality of life possible while living with ALS.
Receiving an ALS diagnosis is overwhelming and leads to many questions and concerns. The society provides various programs and services at no cost to ALS patients and their families; however, patients must be registered patient members or a registered caregiver, friend or family member to access them. There is no membership fee for ALS Patients.
Programs and services include:
- Equipment Loan Program: Designed to help those living with ALS cope with the daily challenges of decreasing mobility and independence by providing basic and essential assistive devices at no charge. This includes mobility equipment, lifts, beds & accessories, bathroom aids, and communication devices.
- Support Groups: For patients, caregivers, family members and friends to discuss issues related to living with ALS or PLS. These groups offer an open, friendly, and safe environment for people to share their experiences and challenges. Trained volunteers from ALS BC facilitate the groups and act as the main point of contact between the Society and the ALS, PLS, and Caregivers’ communities.
- Psychological Treatment Program: The ALS Society of BC has dedicated Psychologists and Registered Clinical Counselors, who are a group of ALS-trained professionals to give much–needed therapy and counselling to people affected by ALS or PLS. Providers can help you cope with emotions and concerns, such as fear, anxiety, depression, family tensions, relationship problems, lifestyle changes, financial stressors and much more.
- Camp Alohi Lani: A 4-day camp getaway that provides a safe setting where youths aged 8 to 17 with a parent or grandparent living with ALS can come together, receive support for their journey with ALS. Campers have the opportunity to connect with other youths from across BC who are affected by ALS in their families. There is no cost to attend with a maximum of 30 participants
- Mobile Clinics: In partnership with Vancouver Coastal Health and the ALS Centre at GF Strong Rehab Centre, the ALS Society of BC provides mobile clinics to outlying communities to offer follow-up appointments to patients who can no longer visit the ALS Centre.
