Palliative & Bereavement Support Services

Provided by Squamish Hospice Society

Offers support and programs for anyone dealing with a life-limiting illness, for their loved ones or for those who are grieving. Serves both Squamish and Whistler (with imited services in Whistler).
Services include:

Palliative Care:
To support those with chronic illness, incurable diseases as well as supporting those facing end of life. The Palliative Care Team includes a Physician Lead, Palliative Care Coordinator, Home Care Nurses, Community Pharmacist, Occupational Therapist, Home Support Workers, and Hospice Volunteers.

One on One Visiting:
Trained staff and volunteers offer social and emotional support to patients and caregivers. Support can include conversations, outings, letter writing or legacy leaving projects, sharing hobbies and interests. Volunteers may visit individuals at home, in hospital, in long-term care or at the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation Sea to Sky Community Hospice unit.

Patient Visits:
Volunteers provide visits at home or hospital. Support can include conversation, outings, letter writing or legacy leaving projects, and sharing hobbies and interests.

Bedside Vigil:
Volunteers support patients and families in the last 48 hours of life. These trained volunteers offer support in the final transition and be a supportive presence to the patient and their loved ones.

Alternative Therapies:
Includes Reiki, therapeutic touch, and massage therapy.

Squamish General Hospital Oncology Tea Service:
Volunteers provide tea and cheer to the Squamish General Hospital Oncology Clinic Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays most weeks.

Bereavement Support:
Trained staff and volunteers offer support for adult grievers and resources for parents or caregivers of young grievers. Programs include Bereavement support groups, Courage to Grieve support packages and Limited one-on-one counselling.

Advanced Care Planning
Hospice volunteers provide support for capturing values around end-of-life care and planning for discussions with your family, friends and loved ones.

Coffee Get Together: Adult Drop-In Grief Group
Open to anyone, this group offers an opportunity to listen and to share grief experiences. It creates time and space to acknowledge our losses in an informal yet supportive and confidential setting.

Bereavement Walking Program:
A weekly program that provides an opportunity to walk with others who are grieving and receive support from trained hospice volunteers.

Infant Loss Kits:
Infant Loss Kits have been made with love to provide a small layer of support during a difficult time for families.
